Minecraft: Cube Game as an Art Review

Review Criterion
To make the high quality content on our website, we've developed a system of creative rules for our reviewers. Our writers are professional app testers: 15 to 20 hours with each app or game on at least one trending version of iOS/Android is a must.

Minecraft is an open-world game based on surviving in an interactive environment and crafting various items, weapons, buildings, and even living creatures. But it’s the creative mode that Minecraft owes its fame of the best creative game. In addition, you can download Minecraft for literally any platform, from old Java feature phones to Tesla cars!

Graphics 5/5

It’s a style now, with all these cubes forming recognizable shapes, and expressive more than one could expect. In the early 2010s, it looked like a compromise between large open world and detail level hardware of the time could handle. But then these rough cubes turned out not so rough, and the scenes made with them became finer than one could imagine. As for music by C418, it’s great on its own, with a meditative vibe, and sold separately on, say, iTunes or Steam.

Gameplay 5/5

The survival version of Minecraft takes you to a cubic-made coast inhabited by hostile creatures you need to hide from in the night. Luckily, you can craft the most primitive hammer and axe with your bare hands, and then go on, rebuilding the civilization. You can build houses, domesticate animals, grow plants, mine ore to get metal from, and so on. This Robinsonade is a creative adventure.

But the Creative mode lets you do even more. In this mode you are not limited in materials, you can edit literally anything, including the stone basement, and you can collaborate with other builders. That’s where Minecraft copies of famous locations, both real and fictional, can be found, as all the results can be shared online. The in-game store lets players sell their items that may enchant others into buying.

Finally, there is Minecraft Earth, the AR-based version that lets you blend Minecraft objects with real-world ones. This mobile app is a logical development of the very Minecraft idea.

Controls 5/5

As a first-person adventure, Minecraft reinvents no wheel. On PC, you always have WASD and a mouse, and more buttons for actions. Xbox and PlayStation versions use a similar scheme with a gamepad. And on touch devices, you have a virtual gamepad that copies that of consoles. Nothing to master: you can start your building activity straight away.

Replay Value 5/5

Its replayability is infinite. There are always new places to build, new objects to create, new collaborations to make. You can build the land of your dreams out of these cubes, dress your character, so he or she cosplay anyone famous, or your real self. Creativity is endless, and with Minecraft you can live that.

The Bottom Line

One of the most creative projects ever in the gaming industry, Minecraft, developed by Mojang, is now distributed by Microsoft and acclaimed as one of the greatest games. It’s also one of the all-time top sellers. Creativity is the greatest human feature, and, placing its bet here, Minecraft wins the jackpot.
