Leafsnap: Unique App to Study Tree Species Review
Leafsnap is a scientific application for users who study botany. Columbia University, University of Maryland, and Smithsonian Institution developed special recognition algorithm that can identify trees from photos of their leaves. Take a photo of the species you don’t know and view instant description cards. You can download Leafsnap for your iPhone and iPad.
Leafsnap app allows you to take photos of trees in Northeast USA and Canada to get instant descriptions of species with detailed high-resolution illustrations of leaves, bark, seeds, petals, fruits, flowers, and petioles.
Leafsnap latest version has a very relevant design. The black background is perfect for examining images. There are 5 tabs. The Home tab includes the information section and access to the games menu. The Browse tab allows you to search species by their name and keywords. The Collection tab is a place where you can find all your snapshots. To make snap, you have to tap the Snap it! tab.
The main idea of this service is to allow students of schools and universities to learn about trees by interacting with them via a phone camera. It’s also a scientific tool that provides users an opportunity to contribute to the research of endangered species. The New York City College team created curricular materials for the app to make it useful for educational purposes.
Leafsnap developers collaborate with environmental-researching foundations in the USA, Canada, and the UK. The Finding Species department created high-resolution images with proper colors. You can zoom these images to make out even the smallest details. All collaborators add new data with every update to enlarge the knowledge database.

This Leafsnap review included testing of versions for iPhone and iPad. Both apps are perfectly optimized. The tablet version allows you to examine species in a more convenient scale. You can also use the online catalog via a web browser. Unfortunately, there’s no way to synchronize your snaps as the app doesn’t allow you to create an account. There is also no version for Android.
You can install Leafsnap on your iOS devices for free. Downloading is available exclusively on the App Store. The full database and other features are free. You can also get free Leafsnap UK with an additional database.
The Bottom Line
Leafsnap is an excellent educational tool for students of colleges and schools. It allows you to obtain more knowledge about trees in Northeast US, New York, Washington D.C., Canada and Great Britain (Leafsnap UK). The high quality of photo-illustrations provides a great opportunity to study species in detail without a magnifier.
Download Leafsnap to get a smart trees-detection tool and learn new species on-the-go without an Internet connection.
Pros : A huge database of species;
Smart detection algorithm;
Cons : Crashes occur;
UK species are available in a separate app.
