iBooks: Your Trusty Reading Companion Review

Review Criterion
To make the high quality content on our website, we've developed a system of creative rules for our reviewers. Our writers are professional app testers: 15 to 20 hours with each app or game on at least one trending version of iOS/Android is a must.

iBooks is an app that enables you to explore books you’ll love. The application is only available for Apple devices, so you can download iBooks on the App Store.

Functionality 5/5

With this application, you can explore a vast selection of both e-books and audiobooks covering a wide range of categories which include fiction, kids books, nonfiction, cookbooks, mysteries, science, thrillers, romance, and everything in-between. You can search the Book Store and discover new releases and curated collections wherever you are. iBooks has an audiobooks tab where you can browse through a wide range of titles which have been narrated by your favorite writers and voice actors. The app enables you to preview books as you try to find something to read.

Design 5/5

iBooks has a neatly organized interface divided into several sections, each with a similar layout so that everything feels familiar and consistent. In the classic fashion of Apple apps, the entire interface is slick and uncluttered, with a few navigation elements as possible. After the recent revamp, the app looks and feels as good as ever, making exceptional use of the minimalist UI philosophy.

Usability 5/5

The usability of this application is certainly easy and intuitive. Navigational components communicate effectively to the user how to get to different pages in the app. For example, a headphones icon represents the audiobooks page. Transitions between different pages and screens are incredibly seamless, smooth and fast. One of the key highlights in this iBooks review is that the app enables you to preview books and download free samples of them.

In some cases, you get to access these books and download their previews before they have been made available on any other platform. The app has Top Charts which enables you to explore what’s popular among other readers. You can easily go back to the books you are currently reading by clicking on the Reading Now tab. An exciting thing about iBooks is that it analyzes the books you read and comes up with suggestions tailored to your specific tastes.

Cross-Platform Use 2/5

iBooks is an app specifically designed for Apple devices. This means that if you have a mobile device running on an operating system other than iOS, then you will not be able to use iBooks. However, there is a required OS version for iOS devices. To download the app, your iDevice must be running on iOS 10.0 or later. The application is available for use on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

In-App Purchases

iBooks is absolutely free to download and use. Surely, there are books in the application that you have to purchase if you want to read or listen to them in full. However, you can’t really consider this as in-app purchases since you are buying a third-party product that you can access with this app. All the features of the app itself come at no charge.

The Bottom Line

Downloading iBooks will give you instant access to a wide range of books, and you can find almost any category of reads you love. You can enjoy previews and book snippets at no cost whatsoever. With a handy recent list and bookmarks, personal recommendations based on your taste, and a plethora of customization options for your reading experience, you won’t find a better alternative.
