Hello Neighbor: The Mystery of the Basement Review

Review Standarts
Our main goal is to provide full and useful app reviews. Our authors strictly follow the rules: minimum 15 hours of the real app usage experience or gameplay, test on main Android and iOS versions, test on phones and tablets.

Hello Neighbor is one of the most popular survival horrors of the late 2010s. Your character, a curious young boy, tries to steal into his sinister neighbor’s house to uncover his dark secrets. You can download Hello Neighbor for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and PC – the horror is everywhere.

Graphics 4/5

The visuals are what the game has often been criticized for. But this roughly drawn world well reflects what goes on in a little boy’s head. Sizes and ratios aren’t what they are to an adult, and colors and shapes are rougher. As for sounds, they are quite okay, not only creating the soundscape but also helping you to detect where any particular sound comes from.

Gameplay 4/5

The story begins when a boy, playing ball in the street, notices something strange happening in his neighbor’s basement. Then he tries to steal in to investigate what’s there. But the neighbor is always prepared for visitors; in addition, he has set lots of traps against possible trespassers.

The ill logic of the maniac you encounter is hard to understand, especially as you impersonate a five-year-old. So you need to be brave and unexpected rather than logical. Along with solving all these puzzles for getting further into the house, you need to watch out for the neighbor patrolling around. Hide when you hear the steps; get out when he’s away.

The AI behind the neighbor is constantly learning, so you won’t just retry the previous attempt; the traps are already where you’ve been. You better improvise and search for other ways… or YouTube videos from those who’s solved that.

Controls 5/5

Being quite ubiquitous, Hello Neighbor is well optimized for various forms of control. As a first-person adventure, it utilizes the familiar scheme compliant with any inputs: touchscreens, gamepads, or mouse and keyboard sets. The left joystick (physical or virtual) or a WASD island is meant for movement, buttons for interaction (or using items from your bag), the right joystick or screen area, as well as the mouse, for moving camera. It’s the same with Nintendo Switch, though Joy-Cons can deliver better than that.

Replay Value 3/5

Survival adventures are only stunning when you try them for the first time. When you’ve been through, there’s no more mystery. Instead, the developers of Hello Neighbor tried to make the game sophisticated, so each puzzle takes longer to solve. Maybe now it makes little sense to replay the moments to make videos for YouTube, as it’s all already there.

The Bottom Line

Hello Neighbor is a game with so much untold that it inspires fans to draw fanart and write fanfics, and well as create communities and publish their gameplay videos. It has two sequels now, being Secret Neighbor, a co-op game, and Hide and Seek, the prequel uncovering the backstory of the antagonist. But the first installment is still the most influent.
